While it may be Boxing Day now, hope you all had a very Merry Christmas. These two definitely did. Three days of travel to see family was well worth it. We took Christmas day to stay cozy in our jammies (thank you to Grandma K for the matching duds) and be together for our first Christmas as four. More photos to come!

Wishing everyone a Merry Christmas. Rob and I feel so thankful for these little but mighty people in our lives. Mac is an ever-present funny, sensitive and active boy and Waverly is a complete lovebug. Her personality is coming through more and more each day. She's the sweetest of sweet and is starting to let us know that while she's definitely up for going with the flow, there's times when the flow no goes:).

Can hardly believe the little lady is two months already. She's cooing and smiling a ton which is making her quite the party girl. We went to her eight week appointment and she's topped 10 pounds now. The doctor made the nurse measure her twice since she couldn't believe she was 24 inches long. She was right, she's 24.5":). Long, string bean to the core!

Due traveling, work, kids and some technical difficulties, where we haven't been able to upload photos from our computer to any other program we are definitely behind on updates. Actually, it appears I have to email photos versus upload them to Blogger.

It's hard to believe that Waverly is almost six weeks. As we try to catch up, here's a recent shot from our trip up to Orcas Island for our friends' wedding, which was so much fun - both the big event and having a family getaway.

Macadam is definitely a growing little boy with plenty of rambunctious times and opinions, and man, he loves his little sister.

While the smiles are all sleepy, gassy ones coming from Waverly these first two weeks, she is probably one of the most mellow babies I've met. It makes me feel grateful that she's our to boot. She may decide to change her tune in the coming weeks but for now, we'll take all she sends our way.

Life continues to move at lightening speed most often for us but it has slowed down at least a notch or two since welcoming this baby girl. More updates and photos soon but here's one of her daily activities below.

Father's Day

Rob's Father's Day was certainly extra special this year. I mean, I did make sure one of the best gifts of all was delivered on time:). All kidding aside, I can't imagine having children or sharing a life with anyone else. He's an amazing father and I've loved watching him as we've both grown as parents with Macadam. Now we have this beautiful little girl and she'll be so lucky to have a dad who will love and support her as only Rob can.

We had a great time celebrating Rob with early morning presents and family cuddle time followed by breakfast with friends and fun at the farmer's market.

Big brother

All of our roles have changed around here and probably the biggest shift is for Macadam. It's still early and we're rather sure that his ideas about Waverly will change, but it's been so wonderful to watch him embrace being a big brother. Throughout my labor, I was really emotional about our little man and what the arrival of our sweet little lady would mean for him. It's been much smoother thus far than I think we imagined or could have hoped and there's been so many heartwarming moments.

As he did on her second day, Mac's been loving having her lie with him and read books as well as his most recent request to hold her.

Four days old

Unknowingly I dressed both Macadam and Waverly in the same onesie at four days old. Looking back at pictures of Mac, I discovered the coincidence and it's really rather cute to see how much they look alike, not just in that curled up newborn way but in many of their features.

The photo above is from when Wavy and I caught a great game of baseball between Mac and Rob. Macadam's obsession with all sports continues but the current game to love is baseball. He's getting so good, we can't really play inside anymore. Also, the third photo below is how high Mac got before we made him come down. Had.no.idea.he.could.climb.that.high!!!

In the short life that is Waverly's, it seems like so much has happened over the last 11 days. Being in the hospital seems like forever ago but really not even two weeks!
Friends and family made their way to greet Waverly in her early hours. Rob and I also got some quality time alone and with her, which was oh so wonderful.

We're just two days in and so far, we're loving every minute of being four. I hope to update with some more pictures of Waverly meeting her grandparents and a few friends.

Our good friends the Martins are also soon welcoming a little girl. We went to their shower over Memorial Day weekend, which was out at Deanna's parents place. Macadam loved it. Not only could he and Natalia play and run around but there were also horses and a tractor.

Last month our dear friends threw us a lovely co-ed shower down in Portland. It was so much fun to see friends and their kids as well as have Macadam and baby girl Faw's grandparents to share in the special event. Mac had a blast running around with all the kids and the adults, well we just let them run around:). We had a great time spending a night downtown and celebrating with friends from Seattle for a delightful Mother's Day too!

As I most wholeheartedly try to keep this a personal space to share about Macadam (and now his future sister), I did want to share some other developing news. Some of you may have received an email from me about the launch of my new site - Drygoods Design - offering fabric by the yard and a selection of the items I make, Bread & Salt. While a couple of retailers in Seattle carry Bread & Salt, the hope is that I'll have more time to widen its distribution as well as sell some pretty incredible fabric.

While there are a ton of fun pictures from our outings over the weekend, I had to post this series of Macadam and Henry. Henry's parents and I went to U of O together and live in Redmond but we definitely do not see each other enough. Henry and Mac are just two weeks apart in age and Henry recently welcomed a baby sister, Reese, in March. Needless to say, they have a lot in common. We met over at the Microsoft campus since they have a pretty sweet venue for rainy weekends and kids. The boys warmed up to each other and then spent the next two hours playing soccer, biking, scooting, running, jumping, crashing, you name it, while we adults chatted and admired the sweet cuddle bug that is Reese.

One of my favorite moments was the below - Macadam and Henry went back and forth pretend laughing and then laughing for real. Hilarity really did ensue. I think there was even some knee slapping for effect. Thank goodness for the free bevs on campus since these kids worked up a sweat with all the playing! And of course, one at the end of Reese - she's so cute and it was great to see into a window of life with a boy and baby girl!

The blues

Yesterday while in the grocery store, Macadam grabbed a box of spaghetti and first pretended it was a harmonica and then a guitar. While strumming said guitar he belted out, a few times over, "I got the blues! Oooh, ooh." Stinkin' cute is what it was. Last night, Macadam and his dad played the guitar and once again, he sang about the blues.

We realized after the co-ed baby shower our friends through us this past weekend that many people had no idea that we knew what we're having this time around. It was wonderful being surprised with Macadam and part of us wanted to do the same with this little person, however, practicality and wanting to know won out. So for those of you that thought we were just really patient and non-curious, we'll set the record straight.

I got this book for Rob as a gift and it's a perfect and fun introduction to what awaits us, or at least a good approach:).

Only a matter of time

I think almost every child does something like Mac did tonight. I know I did it when I was a little older than he and with worse results.

Macadam was supposed to be in bed and while we thought it was just a routine trip to the bathroom, it turned out to be his foray into playing with lipstick and pens. Actually, lip stain to be accurate. Rob initially thought he'd been cut but then quickly realized the "blood" wasn't washing away:).

While we're down a set of sheets and maybe a shirt, at least the new carpet and our walls were spared. It took a lot of makeup remover and cotton swabs to get this little man clean. Giving him consequences without laughing was a little harder too!

Flying south

With a last minute flight deal, Macadam and I were able to tag along to San Diego and while we didn't get to see Rob who was busy with work until the evenings, we got some great quality time with Uncle Justin, Aunt Tristan and sunshine!

Macadam loved getting to be out in the yard playing baseball and napping (even one alongside Uncle Justin) each day. We even got to check out SeaWorld which was a huge hit with Mac. Shamu delivered as did the seals.

It was the last flying trip Mac and I will take until after the baby arrives which made it even nicer to make it to a warm and sunny destination.

Eggs in time out

Easter weekend was a fun one for Macadam. In addition to all of the Easter fun and festivities that come to little kids, he also got to visit with his Grandma Karen. On Friday night we dyed the eggs and to help Mac understand we had to leave the eggs for at least three minutes in the dye, we suggested he put the eggs in time out. He loved this idea since he's the one that usually faces the penalty.

On Saturday we had a busy day complete with the zoo's Easter egg hunt, a Caspar Babypants (yeah, don't feel bad if you don't know this band) concert and then park time before a yummy dinner on a patio in Ballard, followed by a gelato treat. We definitely noticed Macadam was pretty wiped out by Sunday morning but he was excited to discover the Easter Bunny left him a nice surprise and even hid his eggs to hunt around the house and outside. The only problem was getting Mac back inside once he discovered that his backyard was ready for digging again. When it started raining we still had some trouble convincing him but soon enough he was back inside, warm and ready for more Easter surprises, which he enjoyed with his grandma.

A new era

This will most likely be the first in a long line of similar photos. The below is how Mac and I spent two hours yesterday. While he's been all about baseball for a few weeks, he's only had that glove in his possesion for less than 48 hours and he's been without it for maybe two hours, it and a soft baseball have been with him even during naps and while he sleeps at night. The backward baseball cap is new too this week and more than ever we're reminded that Mac is all boy and a sweet, lovely one at that:)

Guys' weekend

While I was in Denver this last weekend for our annual U of O girls' weekend, Rob and Macadam had a special visitor. Grandpa Terry was in town and on Saturday, he and Macadam were busy having fun while Rob had a work event. It's always hard to be gone from my boys and it made me smile when I saw the pictures Grandpa Terry sent us from their adventures. Macadam and his dad had a great time bonding too. I swear Mac is even more talkative and more a mini man than when I left. He told me all about the aquarium, playing soccer and basketball, and going to the park.

I had a fantastic time with the ladies, both friends and two of the newest members of the crew, Anna (9 months)and Charlotte (3 months). We had beautiful weather, lovely times out and about in Denver and Boulder as well as plenty of time to catch up and laugh. They also threw me a surprise shower, which was such a treat and much fun to show Rob the goodies when I returned. While we all live far apart it's nice that we each live in pretty great cities and towns to visit.

Fun eastward

We recently returned from a very fun trip to Michigan. I've never gone somewhere where so many people leading up to the trip ask, "Why would you want to go there?!" Well, we just happen to have lovely cousins and friends who live there and thankfully, only an hour apart from each other. While it was chilly chilly, it was very sunny, which made outings and packing much easier.
Macadam had an absolute blast and so did Rob and I. Getting to see John, Tracy, Miles and the newly minted Benjamin was such a treat. We had plenty of laughs, late nights and good times watching the toddlers play and getting drunk off the new baby smell of Ben:). We learned that the best way to get away from people is to go to the Detroit Zoo on a 30 degree day. Not only did we have the whole place to ourselves, they let us close it down an hour late. Miles and Mac had fun checking out all the animals and while the photos below would say otherwise, no, the guys and boys were not going for a bloods and crips theme in outdoor attire:).

After Rochester Hills, we headed to Ann Arbor to visit Shannon and Bobby who are living there while Bobby, or Silly Guy as Macadam called him, is in his PhD program at Univ. of Michigan. For several years I have wanted to go to a deli and store there called Zingerman's. When we found out the Yuens were moving there, I was excited that a future visit would mean getting to try it. I can say now that it was worth every minute of Rob and Bobby standing in line for an hour:). Seriously though, best sandwich and cold brew coffee ever! The food and fun didn't stop or begin there though. Macadam's still asking about where his cousins and Shannon and Bobby live, which we point to at night on his globe.

Shannon and Bobby also gave us a mini urban ruins tour of Detroit. It is one of the most haunting cities I've ever seen. The mass exodus has definitely left its mark and while part of you wants to go buy a building for dirt cheap, it also makes a strong case for how lucky you are to live in a place where people want to be and, for the most part, thrive. However, there are definitely some areas where renewal is around the corner.

Mostly, the trip was a wonderful reminder about how distance definitely makes it hard to see each other but the bonds of family and friends surpass it all. We came back relaxed, refreshed and thankful!

While I am still working on getting photos up from our fantastic trip to Michigan last week, I wanted to post a little something since who knows if it will be tomorrow or next week when I update the blog again. In addition to our often busy schedule, we're in the middle of some house improvements to make adding one more person to our abode a little easier. Will post pictures of those fun updates next month (if all is done by then). Needless to say life is flying by at record speed.

I also hope to get some video up soon - Macadam is full of funny thoughts, opinions and other behaviors which are best caught on tape.

Snowy getaway

It's taken me way too long to get this post together but at least I am caught up with photos on Flickr. Last month, we went on a trip to Whistler with friends and although the snow was wetter than we'd like, it was a very fun-filled weekend with three pregnant women, their men, two little ones and four dogs. Can you say full house? Luckily, the place was spacious and the kids and the adults got out to play in the snow. Macadam was way more into building a snow fort and snowmen than sledding. Now that we're back home, he just wants to make frosty snowmen with barkdust since we don't have snow. The cold weather tour continues this month with a trip to Michigan and then Denver for me and college friends. I think warmer latitudes will be in order very soon!

Bye, bye baby

In the last two weeks Macadam has said so long to two of the most quintessential elements of life as a baby - diapers and his crib. Two weekends ago marked his entry into diaper free life and last weekend he started sleeping in his big, twin bed. Here are a few shots of him running around in his underwear and trying out the potty. I can't wait to sneak some shots of him sleeping in his bed because it's oh so sweet and rather unbelievable how quickly he's growing up. For now, these were post-nap.

Last weekend was rather tiring since we didn't get to leave the house in an effort to focus on the training but we did have a lot of fun clapping, cheering for making it to the bathroom in time and running laps in the hallway to keep from cabin fever. He's been asking for weeks, if not months, about when his big bed will be here and we finally got all the pieces needed to make it happen last Friday. Plus, it's even nicer that he can get out of bed by himself when nature calls.

We're hoping to go easy on the little man with big changes and transitions in the next couple of months so he'll be a champ at all of the above before his new sibling arrives in June.

Belly up to the bar

While Macadam still loves to dive into his meals (okay, be coerced into sitting with us for meals) in his high chair, the last few weeks he's started to love sitting at the big table and enjoys the bar stools. The problem is that we only have two, so it looks like the delayed purchase of more is just around the corner.

Pint-sized news

We've tried to share the news the best we can, but in case we haven't seen or talked to you in awhile, it's true, another little Faw is on their way! After seeing this book a couple of times, I finally had to get it. We're not sure if it's the subject matter or whether Macadam looks like the little boy and I, the mom, but he l-o-v-e-s this book! We read it to him at least twice a day. If you're expecting another child or know someone who is, this might be a great gift for the big sibling.

Now that the cat's out of the bag, I am sure more posts will be baby arrival related. We're due mid-June, which will probably be here before we know it!

Weekend away

We recently had our first weekend sans our little man (little men if you count Buster). It was fun, relaxing and very strange to not have him with us for two days. We're still not sure why it took us two plus years, but timing was finally right. We stayed at one of our favorite (okay mine) hotels, shopped, went out to dinner, and saw wonderful friends of which we don't get to see nearly enough. Our camera battery was on the fritz so photos are few.

Macadam had a fantastic time playing inside and out while at the farm. He may have missed us at some point, we still can't be sure.

Go Ducks!

Tonight Mac and I rooted for the Ducks and their quest for the national championship. It's like he knew it was going to be a nailbiter even though he had to go to bed during halftime. Since Buster's not nearly as good as Mac at giving high fives and yeling, "Go Ducks," it's been harder to get through the second two quarters. Here's hoping!

Just bust a move

My mom just gifted me with a Flip video camera for my birthday and after several months of not having a camera with video, we instantly caught Mac on tape. After misplacing a gift from his friend Jack of his favorite songs, we were able to play them in the car. We were pleasantly surprised with the second song (the first being from Elmo) being something Rob and I both loved in elementary school.

We had a lovely evening ringing in the new year with our good friends and it continued this morning with a walk on one of the most beautiful of cold, winter mornings. Macadam loved having the Mastans sleep over. His first words this morning (after he pretended to be sleeping by fake snores) was, "Where Ali go?" He was delighted when I said they were downstairs.
We think 2011 is going to be a good one, and wish the same to all of our wonderful friends and family.

A cozy Christmas

After a few days of celebrating the holidays with friends and late nights, Christmas was the perfect day of cozy celebrating between Rob, me, Macadam and even Buster. Santa came in and set up the addition to Macadam's Legoville trains (his helper even ran to the store at 10:30 Friday night for the right batteries) to go around the tree when Mac came downstairs in the morning. At first it was almost too overwhelming but soon, Macadam was down on the ground playing but also wanting to see if Santa had drank the milk we set out as well as ate the cookies and gave the reindeer the carrots.

Stockings were so fun. He had asked for an apple for Christmas and he was so happy when he saw one in his stocking. We're pretty sure that's all he would have needed for the day, but of course, the present opening continued. Between presents, playing and seeing family on Skype and talking on the phone, it was a big day for the little man.

All Mac wanted to do the whole day is play, play, play. Every time we asked him what he wanted to do, he just replied Play! We didn't leave the house all day, it was perfect. Rob and I blow torched (yes, really) our rib roast and it was delish, accompanied by some other yummy goodness.

We hope all of you had a great holiday, no matter where you were!

Funny, goofy and oh so silly

I just saw these photos again which are a couple months old and had to post because they are so Macadam. He runs around with his pirate hat or other accessory and just loves taking his Rody horse, which he has now named, wait for it...Whinney, around with him.

His recent acquired skills are a set of stall tactics, strategically implemented when he knows he's just minutes, if not seconds, away from having to go upstairs and go start the bedtime routine. He'll charmingly go play with toys he rarely touches or insist that Whinney needs to be fed and ridden. It's ridiculously cute and funny and well, he knows that too. The other night Rob and I were dying laughing from his newly shaped routine and couldn't stop long enough to catch it on film. Until we do, here are some of those from earlier this fall.

O, Christmas Tree

A best laid plan. We'd originally been scheduled to head out into the wintery wonderland of wilderness with some good friends and chop down a tree with a permit, followed by sledding and roasting things over a fire. The weather and our immune systems had other plans. Instead, we made the most of a record rainfall and had our friends over for a delicious brunch and then headed to Swanson's for reindeer, a camel, miniature donkey and koi. Those are the four animals you think of for Christmas, right:)? Macadam and Natalia loved it. Afterwards we made a game of looking for pinecones in a local park and then headed to support our local boy scout troop by buying our tree from them.

It turned out to be such a fun day and we stayed relatively dry and were close to home. By the evening the tree was dry and we started the trimming. Mac helped this year with hanging ornaments and so far does more to keep them on there than take them off.

The holidays are the best yet as Macadam understands the whole magic of Santa and our little friend, The Elf on the Shelf. We discovered the elf a few years ago thanks to our friends, the Boyers, and while last year Mac was excited to find him every morning, this year he's ecstatic. The book itself, we think, did a ton to make it so Macadam was okay with hanging out with Santa. We were invited to go on the Santa Train this year, and what a fun trip! It's on a train from the early 20th century that they've restored and runs from North Bend to Snoqualmie, just a 20 minute train ride and then the kids get to meet Santa and listen to carolers. We were shocked that Macadam not only sat on Santa's lap but he kind of even jumped into it. While shy, he was super happy and excited when with him. It was adorable and so fun to see. In fact, out of the six kids in our group, no one lost it. After Santa, we had some warm cookies and hot chocolate before getting back on the chilly train. We even had VIP treatment from a sweet conductor who is friends with one of ours. He gave the kids train whistles - which to some other adults was not the gift of music:).

Mac doesn't say Santa. He says, "Ho, ho, ho" and "lap." Maybe by next year, he'll have his name down:).

Thanksgiving part II

After celebrating up north here in Seattle, we traveled south for a three day tour of Oregon to see family. Friday we spent at the farm in Gobel with Grandpa Terry and Grandma 3/Dinah as well as Rob's brother and his fiancee and her family too. It was fun, festive and Macadam's love for the farm grows each time. He had a blast walking the grounds and getting see the honeycombs. Saturday we spent the morning with my family, not only seeing Grandma and Grandpa Fox but also Macadam's aunts and uncles and all six cousins! The newest addition, Olivia, is just a beauty and was only two weeks old. Mac had so much fun with his older cousins, they loved entertaining him too. That afternoon we headed to Grandma Karen and spent some much needed time with the Kullberg side of the family. Macadam's cousins are even closer in age to him and there was plenty of fun. Uncle Justin put in the hard work of chasing the kids, which kept them running, laughing and screaming for more.

As a kid who grow up with no cousins (that weren't my aunts' pets), it's so fantastic to see Mac play with his. While it was a tiring weekend of travel, it was a joy to get time with family.

Backtracking

While I was getting caught up on our Flickr photos I realized I never posted photos from our trip to San Francisco back in October. One of my dearest friends from college, Kathleen, married her fantastic man Chris and we were there to celebrate the beautiful occasion. One top of that, we had an extra day or two in one of our favorite cities, saw Pat and Megan as well as more time with college folks.

Macadam had a blast chasing the birds at the Ferry building and waterfront, sampling our favorite bakery Tartine, as well as exploring Golden Gate park and hanging out with his new friend, Anna Badger who was just three months old when we were there. Thanksgiving part I

Before we headed down to Oregon for our family tour, we had a lovely little Thanksgiving celebration at home. It started with a snowy visit to the coffee shop, chatting with friends, then a day of cooking, movies and eating. Macadam, at first, looked to be revolting against Thanksgiving fare and then he went crazy for cranberry and the turkey leg, it was hilarious and surprising. While I always think we should do more throughout the year to remember how lucky we are in life, there are few holidays that match for tradition, coziness, love, and delicious food as Thanksgiving does. It's more and more fun as Mac gets older too, which makes me even more thankful for a happy, healthy and whole family.

Let it snow

We had three days of wicked weather here in Seattle. Luckily, we were able to stay close to home once it got really bad. The good? Snow on the ground and a little guy who loves it. Early Monday morning Macadam insisted it was tickling him and by Tuesday afternoon it was his snow, or rather, "my snow." What's the point of anything if it can't be yours alone. At least to a two-year old, everything is his:).

Here are some shots from yesterday afternoon and bit of the snow had melted, as well as a walk on Sunday which had him getting prepared with his cold weather gear.

Macadam patiently handled his costume and won many a heart around Ballard today. Actually, more laughs. He was asked many times if people could take photos of him and with him, very cute. He and his friends had a blast together and I have to say, it was so much fun to watch him enjoy all the tradition and frenzy of it all. Once he figured out that people gave you candy if there was a bucket in your hand, watch out. He was loving it!

Squash, rain, fun

A couple of weekends ago we made our annual trip to Bainbridge to a sweet little pumpkin patch. We went there even before Macadam came along and it's quickly become a tradition. Before venturing into mud, we ate some yummy food and enjoyed spending time with good friends. It's so cute to see Mac react to our plans. I told him we were going to the pumpkin patch, "Yay!" I told him and we were going to see Aunt Marissa and Uncle Ali and that got a, "Yay!" plus two arms in the air. So cute!

More festivities

After celebrating Mac's birthday with his friends, we entered a weekend of non-stop family and friends. In addition to getting to see all his grandparents, Macadam also got to see his cousins, Aunt, Uncle, Olivia and Ryan as well as have an extra play date with his buddy Jack. He had so much fun, and was spoiled to the nines. It was so nice to have so many of those close to us celebrate him!

It's still slideshows galore as we get caught up, but there's some very cute moments caught on film.

Really, he's two?

We are almost in a constant state of disbelief around here that Macadam is two now. Every age and stage has been a favorite for me but this new age of super chatty, super active and super opinionated is easily vying for one of the best yet. Macadam constantly has us in stitches with his humor, conversational skills and undying desire to do things "by me" which is Macadamese for let me do it on my own. The independence days have arrived as you can get him to do practically anything if the alternative is you carrying him:).
September 3rd marked his second birthday and it wasn't but within a week where it seemed he was saying new things, more things, and just all around blossoming. He loved getting to celebrate with a few of his small friends and then individual time with grandparents (will post those photos soon).

Some of Mac's favorite things at the ripe old age of two:
Trucks - mainly garbage (garbee) but not terribly discrimantory
Horses - everything can be turned into a stick horse
Music - guitars, his new keyboard, castanets, you name it, such as a parent's head, is a musical instrument
Feed the Frog - his favorite band, which plays at the Ballard Farmers Market
Sports - football, soccer, basketball, all sports. He dragged me six blocks the other week just to go to his favorite sports bar (slightly frightening) aka our favorite family friendly happy hour spot which plays sports
Hugs and kisses
1,2,3 - Go! - A fun game which consists of him running back and forth between the kitchen and living room or any space really
Tuck tuck - being tucked in
Please and thank you - seriously crowning achievement on the parental list for us right now
Little Bear - recently edged out Elmo for favorite weekly tv time
Shoes - I think it's hazard of Rob's job but this kid knows shoes and loves wearing them:)
Stalling tactics - he knows what's coming and works out ways to delay such things as bedtime, diaper changes and leaving fun places

A whole new view

I mentioned in another post that we redid our backyard/patio. In the more than four years we've lived in our place, we've never really used the backyard. At first it was too small, and then it just became a minor jungle and riddled with rainy days, a dog and a temporary fence. Back in May, I pulled the plug and started the demolition phase. After we got back from our trip, we put a plan in place and transformed it into one of my favorite places to relax yet. I've longed wanted a European courtyard/outdoor living room space, and thanks to our recent trip, Rob agreed after seeing the concept in action.

While I worked on all the prep and demolition, Rob faithfully helped me spread more than 3000 pounds of gravel and solo, built the most perfect fence, which we stained a dark walnut. In the end, we added 24 square feet by redoing the yard and Mac loves it as he can shovel and spread the gravel over and over. Too bad it's not an Indian Summer this year but thanks to some recent sunny days, we've spent plenty of fun days and evenings with the babes and friends.

Bonjour, we're back!

In addition to taking trips, redoing a back yard and enjoying the summer, we (I mean me) took a break from blogging. After more than two years of being rather diligent about posts and photo uploading, I just had to take a breather. Now, with new schedules and a new season upon us, I'm back and hopefully on track to share more happenings with our little man.

To catch up, we went and returned from one amazing trip! Rob and I wanted to get in one last big trip before we had to start paying for Mac's airfare and we'd long wanted to go to a small, quiet corner of the world and just relax our own way. We realized it hadn't been since our honeymoon that we'd gone on a trip afar without a wedding involved! Where did we go? We went to a region in Southwestern France called the Dordogne. It was magical. Macadam loved it and so did we. The hope is to return in a few years when we need another relaxing holiday.

We took more than 2000 photos but I've uploaded about 200 of them, which you can see via Flickr slideshow below.

We cooked, we ate, we swam and we saw a lot of medevial structures and towns. We made day trips to Bordeaux, Cahors, Bergerac and had just a day in Paris. What makes me smile, is that Mac still remembers so much about the trip. He made friends with many animals there, and still talks and asks about them. And he'll still say bonjour and merci if you ask him. He also expanded his flirting routine to a whole new level.

By the time most of you read this, we'll be on our way here, here and here ( I know, I know - it looks awful:)). Since it may be awhile before we post again, I wanted to show a little of what Mac's been up to lately.

This last weekend, I rigged a little tent with a piece of twine and some fabric. After being a little hesitant, Macadam loved it. Here's a series of shots from our little rainy afternoon fun.

Ah vegetables. They used to be a fan favorite but for several months now, we've diligently and covertly snuck them into Macadam's diet as he hasn't been keen on their presence. Mind you, at child care, we know that he eats certain ones a lot. However, in the last week or two, he's been loving green beans. In fact, he'll skip the usual favorite of cheese or brown and rise and just eat the beans. I caught him on tape for the first devouring of them last week. Enjoy!

It was hard to pick the best of the three videos we last took of Mac and his Rody horse. He loves the book, Cowboy Small by Lois Lenski and he is really into riding his horse these days. Mostly it's because the bouncing is a lot easier. He's also enjoying strumming his air guitar and singing, "Home, home on the range..." It sounds more like, "Ohmmm, ahhh, raaaa," but either way, it's equal parts entertaining and adorable.

That's how long it's taken me to get photos uploaded from our very fun trip to Ocean Shores back in February. Our friends, the Martins, were nice enough to invite us for a weekend in a perfect place for six adults, three toddlers and three dogs. It was a weekend full of happy and small feet going pitter patter, good food, the beach and quality time with friends. The weather was equal parts stormy and sunny. Still not sold on the Washington coast over the Oregon coast but maybe it just depends on the company you keep...
The slideshow is long but there are some wonderful moments between Mac, Lila and Natalia. Watching three toddlers interact is something else.

Mac was so excited to ride his new (to him) and first tricycle this evening that there was only time to get boots on him. Pants were deemed not necessary;). Parental feet will most certainly be more firm when put down for future rides. I have a video on my phone which i hope to upload soon too!

It was the first time that we ended up buying something Macadam picked up, or rather, wouldn't let us take away and since he seemed to be strategic - cute winter hat, on sale and a little big, thus perfect for next fall, we figured we might as well accept we've taught him well. Somehow, I don't think this will be the last battle we'll have over such things.

Goodness gracious

While I try desperately to get Flickr updated to March 2010 (currently up to December), I can't help but feel guilty about not updating the blog. We've had so many adventures in the last month and it's hard to try and capture all of them.

I guess the biggest is that Mac is now 18 months old. He's a toddler in every sense of the word. He loves to have fun, get sick and throw tantrums but most importantly, he's becoming who he is and who he will be. As much as recognizing that we really have no control over him is hard, it's also a rather wonderful dose of reality. Yes, we diligently work to set boundaries and expectations but he is the one who knows best how to surprise us and keep us on our toes.

So what's he up to? He's coming off a serious bout with stomach flu (sorry to all of you infected, which were many), an ear infection and giggles. For the first time in months though, there's no runny nose and thankfully, our funny, silly little boy is happy again. A week is a long time in childhood and we're happy the last two are over. Macadam is loving to talk, dance, sing and interact (aka flirt) with all around him. Mac also likes everything to do with football, basketball and music. It's hard to tear him away from the park, his friends and the computer (which symbolizes his time with Elmo and nail trims). And next time you're with him, say cheers because this boy knows how to toast! Mac also loves to read right now, which we hope carries on forever.

Snowy getaway

A few weeks ago we went to the Methow Valley in Washington and man, was it beautiful. We had a wonderful time with good friends and a cozy setting. Maris, Mac and I went snowshoeing while the boys stayed back with the dogs. Macadam had a blast, as did Buster. We can't wait to return when we're all feeling super healthy.

Fun with Diana

Fun with the Diana+ lens, that is...My mom gifted me with a long-desired lens for our camera over Christmas and with the sun now shining more often, I have been able to play around with it more. While there's still some more work to be done, I love these photos from our walk earlier this week. The whole point of the lens (based off the original camera) is for a dreamy, vintage effect. I dare say these accomplished it:).

Well, it's been awhile

Before jumping into the new year - here's a collection of highlights from last month and the end of a pretty busy, fun and wonderful year. Let's hope 2010 brings plenty more adventures, good health and time to share with family and friends.

As for our holiday season - it was rather fantastic. While we missed not getting to see family and friends as we typically do during the holidays in Oregon, it was so nice to stay close to home and just enjoy our little family of three. In between walks, good food and other celebrations, Macadam loved it. He wasn't sure what to do when the tree was gone but loves his new little play area as he loves, loves, loves to sit at tables.

Living where we live, being healthy and having wonderful people in our lives has long been reason enough to be thankful. Yet when you add an adorable, sweet, charming and rambunctious son into the equation, there are hardly words for how lucky we truly are. Like most Thanksgivings, we stuck close to home and enjoyed a day of good food, drink and movies. We had good friends over to share the day and it was a fantastic way to enter the holiday season.

In the last month or so, Macadam has really taken to feeding himself with utensils. He's long been a fan of finger feeding but now he's taken it up a notch. If you don't like messes, it's not for the faint of heart. What's really cute is that he likes to dip his food too.

A little boy

In the last few weeks, Macadam has become a little boy. He's showing us he plays different from his girl counterparts, loves to be rough and tumble and wants to communicate each chance he gets. It's been so much fun to see these changes take shape.

I realized we haven't shared some of his latest and greatest as now that he's past his first year, the monthly updates don't seem as relevant. However, here's a little summary of his favorite things to do and say these days. Probably our two crowning achievements are Mac being able to say please (both aloud and in sign language) and blow his nose in a tissue. Although aloud please sounds more like deezs and he'll blow his nose about every third request.

He's obsessed with these flash cards he got for his birthday as well as blocks. Instead of knocking everything down, he's putting things together too. As for walking, he's taking a ton of steps while holding onto a toy, bottle or the like but has yet to take flight completely without balance assistance.

Wow- where to begin? Our last big trip of 2009 was to New York (Rob and Mac's first time) and it was fantastic. While tiring for most of us, it had a little bit of everything and went off without a hitch. The first few days we didn't get to see much of Rob since he was working nonstop at the marathon expo but by Saturday night we were three once more. Mac and I spent the first couple of days getting settled, walking around and preparing for the big race with Erin and Lila. The New York marathon was an incredible experience and was actually not as brutal as I had imagined (but then again we aren't hardcore runners who needed to compete). I was honored to run for such an amazing organization, Jack's Fund, and want to thank all who donated to Jack's on my behalf! I truly couldn't have done without you who donated's support - it meant more than you know and is making an impact to help fight against such a deadly disease.

Here is a selection of pics. We were so busy that we didn't have too many opportunities to take pics. Also want to thank Erin and Michael, and their families for helping us have such a great time while there and being partners in crime as we trained for the race. Mac's Mr. T costume worked out really well and he loved having the Mr. T in Your Pocket, which helped him say things like, "Quit your jibber jabber," and "Don't make me mad, errrr!" Unfortunately, we didn't get picture of our celeb sightings either, but then again, maybe that's best. Speaking of celebs, we also got to see our dear friend Shannon (who moved to Michigan in the summer) for lunch on Monday before we flew out. Couldn't have asked for a better trip and here's to staying home for a few months!
